Why See a Chiropractor? The Benefits of Chiropractic Care

Last week, we announced that we’ll be offering onsite chiropractic care to our employees at Fairmont Hospital starting in just two short weeks. Since we are a conventional medical facility and chiropractic care is considered a CAIM (Complementary Alternative Integrative Medicine) modality, I wanted to spend a little time today explaining why visits to the chiropractor might be a great addition to your health and wellness plan.

Chiropractic for Healing

“Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases.” – Hippocrates

The practice of manipulating bone and tissue can be traced back to the beginning of recorded history as a way of relieving pain, especially in the lower back. But today, the practice of chiropractic has many indications, from pain relief to arthritis to headaches. While it’s not considered a specific allergy treatment, many patients have also experienced relief from their allergies due to chiropractic visits.

Why is this? The purpose of chiropractic manipulations is to remove subluxations in the spine. A subluxation is a slight misalignment of the vertebrae, regarded in chiropractic theory as the cause of many health problems.– it’s essentially a partial dislocation. These misalignments in the spine create stress on the nervous system, impeding optimum communication to other areas of the body and optimum systems performance in general — including the immune system. In other words, chiropractic adjustments can optimize immune system function by aligning the spine for proper functioning of the nervous system.

Chiropractic has also been shown to reduce blood pressure in hypertensive patients by way of a specific adjustment to the cervical spine. Just one adjustment was as effective as two prescription medications used in tandem and had a lasting effect for up to 6 months. Pretty amazing!

Chiropractic as Prevention

In addition to acute relief from pain, arthritis, allergies, and hypertension, chiropractic is also a wonderful prevention tool for lasting health and vitality. Regular adjustments and realignments of subluxations help keep the body performing optimally, help reduce inflammation — a major source of disease in the body — and provide stress relief through a reduction in cortisol.

If you’ve never experienced the benefits of chiropractic care, please consider taking advantage of our onsite services, which are absolutely free for employees with our self-funded Freedom of Choice health plan.
