I’m sad that we keep having to postpone or cancel the Smoothie Club at Fairmont, but since this time it’s because I’ll be on vacation, my sadness is (selfishly) overshadowed by excitement! In an attempt to persuade some of our faithful Smoothie Club members to hold Smoothie Club without me, I’m posting the recipe I shared at Highland’s Smoothie Club last month. This one is a great morning option, as it does contain a bit of caffeine from the instant coffee.
Admittedly, I had my reservations about using instant coffee. But what I found at Whole Foods is pure coffee grinds, no chemicals, no preservatives, and it’s actually pretty tasty on its own if you’re in a pinch! When used in this recipe, the coffee gives you a wonderful coffee flavor, a boost of energy, and the peace of mind that your blended mocha drink is actually doing something GOOD for you, not just feeding you empty calories.
A word on caffeine:
The Mayo Clinic says that consumption of up to 400 mg of caffeine per day is safe for healthy adults. That’s the equivalent of 4 cups of coffee a day. I was personally surprised by that number, because it seems high to me. If I drink more than one cup, I can feel the consequences: clenched jaw, trouble sleeping, digestive stress. But everyone’s different. My point is that caffeine is not inherently bad.
In fact when used in moderation, caffeine has been shown in a number of studies to actively benefit your health and wellness. I pulled this info from studies referenced at HowStuffWorks.com. You might be surprised!
- Regular coffee drinkers were 80 percent less likely to develop Parkinson’s disease.
- Two cups a day reduced subjects’ risk for colon cancer by 20 percent.
- Two cups a day caused an 80 percent drop in the odds of developing cirrhosis.
- Two cups a day cut the risk of developing gallstones in half.

- ¼ to ½ avocado
- Romaine lettuce
- 1 scoop gelatin hydrolysate or hemp protein
- 1 tbsp instant coffee
- ½ tbsp Raw Cacao or cocoa
- 1 tbs Enjoy Life Mini Chocolate Chips
- 1 tbs maple syrup
- Nut, Rice, or Hemp Milk
- Pinch of sea salt
