Despite some apprehension from both my husband and the members of Smoothie Club at both sites, I think we have another winner! The apprehension was around the combination of kiwi and avocado — my advice would be to think of the function of each ingredient. Kiwi makes it sweet and tart, and avocado makes it creamy. What’s sweet, tart, and creamy? Frozen yogurt? Sorbet? Kefir? Lots of yummy things, so don’t hold back on giving this one a go.
A few recommendations for this recipe: cut the kiwis in half and then scoop out the centers instead of trying to peel each one; make sure the kiwis are very ripe; don’t overdo the stevia. We all noticed a bit of a spicy bite to this drink; it was the kiwi — it almost tasted like we added pepper! I even had one faithful smoothie club member asking if I’d included cayenne in the recipe! Everyone agreed that the added kick was good, but I’ve noticed that the riper the kiwi, the less of a kick. So if you’re not into the idea of a spicy smoothie, go for very soft kiwis. But don’t let the spice discourage you! This recipe was very popular. We even had new club members this month coming to sample and then purchase this blended bounty.
Nearly every ingredient in this smoothie is green, hence the name “Green Goddess.” A drink like this is very cleansing to the system and rich in phytonutrients, vitamins, and minerals. You also get a good dose of healthy fats from the avocados and seeds in the mix. Just in time for the warm weather, this drink makes a perfect mid-day snack for a back yard gardener or fuel for an afternoon bike rider. Enjoy!
