Popped Quinoa!!!

This week’s recipe has been percolating in my mind ever since I learned a very interesting piece of information:

You can actually pop quinoa like popcorn!

Sure, the before and after don’t look all that different, but once quinoa is popped, it becomes crunchy and toasty, a great addition to tons of dishes!

So … what’s quinoa? some of you may be asking. Quinoa is a South American plant that creates grain-like seeds, eaten traditionally for centuries by native folks in Ecuador, Bolivia, Columbia and Peru. It’s recently found fame here in the US for it’s incredible nutritional value and high protein content. It’s technically a pseudocereal, rather than a true cereal like rice, wheat, and oats, and is more closely linked to beets and spinach than other grains. (source)

Now that I know I can pop quinoa easily and quickly, I plan to incorporate this crunchy, nutritious delight into all sorts of fun meals, which I’ll be sharing as I perfect them I’m sure! Today, however, I’ve come up with a variation on a candy bar. I am taking suggestions on names for this exciting concoction, but for now, I’m calling it…

It’s Not Birdseed!!!!


1/4 cup popped quinoa
heaping spoonful of almond butter
slightly less heaping spoonful of raw honey (check out this post on sweeteners to find out “why raw?”)
1 tbs sunflower seeds
1 tbs hempseeds (can use sesame seeds if you don’t have hemp, but the total protein will be a little less)


Place all ingredients into a bowl and mix — it’s more fun if you use your hands!

Once everything is throughly mixed, mold mixture into a log and refrigerate for half an hour.

Slice into 10 pieces, and enjoy! (2pc per serving)
